Earth Day

A breath of fresh air

April 22nd. Earth Day. A day of awareness for our environment.

A little history lesson...

Earth Day was founded by Senator Gaylord Nelson in a seven year period beginning in 1962 to 1969. In the words of Gaylord Nelson,

"We had neither the time, nor the resources to organize 20 million demonstrators and the thousands of schools and local communities that participated. That was the remarkable thing about Earth Day. It organized itself."

There are so many different ways to help out...

  1. Recycle - sure you have to sort but hey it's a small step!

  2. Plant a tree - get down and dirty!

  3. Turn off some lights - those monsters won't get you!

  4. Don't use plastic bags - so out of style!

  5. Get new GE lightbulbs - go green and save some green!

So now that you know the origin of Earth Day and a few helpful hints to getting started, get up and start making a difference. That's right! NOW.

Lights, Camera, Action!

I have just recently been cast as Crystal in Little Shop of Horrors. Sadly, I do not know much about this play, but I'm learning. =D.. This is the first show I've done where everyone, and yes I mean EVERYONE, dies! When we were just reading through the script, I was in shock when some of the characters didn't even make it to the second act.

I have been in many shows. My first play was Wizard of Oz. I was the youngest munchkin. The other cast members called me the Littlest Blueberry (my costume was a round, blue, fabricated ball with arm, leg, and a head holes). I remember my first line. When the house landed on the Wicked Witch of the East, I ran up to the house and said in my "big girl" voice, "There's a girl in there!"

I have also played a student in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. For a while there, I was "in love" with the young man who played Joseph. I think we all were!

Princess Yingyowlak (you say it like it's spelled) was my first "major" character. I actually had a whole speech for Miss Anna in The King and I.

Annie. My FAVORITE show. I had the chance to play the Orphan Annie my 5th grade year. I was so excited I could not sleep the night I found out the cast. The picture is of me, when my mom bleached my hair so it would dye red easier. Opening night I got so nervous, I broke down in tears. My mom took me to a back room and listened to me practice my songs. All the other "orphans" and even the director consoled me and tried to make me feel better.

Imogene in The Best Christmas Pageant Ever was the hardest character I have ever played. She was so unlike me. I remember I was MORTIFIED when I had to hold a lit cigar and pretend I was smoking it!

I was "Big Alice" in Alice in Wonderland. We had to have two Alices so she could grow and shrink.

Alice was my last show. I am VERY excited to get back into plays. Little Shop of Horrors here I come!

New Found Appreciation.

I have always believed slavery was wrong, but I have never been able to capture how heartwrenching it could really be. Finishing Copper Sun by Sharon M. Draper enabled me to walk in a slave's shoes for the first time. I barely got through the third chapter when I had to close the book, place it beside my bed, and just...cry. Draper used such vivid descriptions, that I felt like I was there.

Amari is a beautiful, young, black woman who lives in Zaivi, Africa. When white men come to her village, the elders welcome them with open arms. In return for their unconditional hospitality, all of the villagers are brutally murdered except for the strongest men and prettiest women. Heartbroken, Amari travels by boat, like an animal, to the colonies.

I could taste the freedom Amari so much desired. I could smell the fear she felt when she was called to her Master's bedroom at night. I could feel the hope that burned inside, just below her hard outer shell. Amari learned to never ever give up. Not on faith. Not on hope. Not on love. And most importantly, not on freedom. I am so appreciative of freedom. The freedom to just...live.

My First Post

To be or not to be. That is the question. Just kidding! This is not one of "those" blogs. This blog is to let my just.. write. I am not a huge writing fan, but hey practice makes perfect, right? Since I have to have to blog for English, I thought I could put down ideas here that aren't assignments. So stay tuned! There is more to come!
